RENO, Nev. – The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has announced that The Children’s Cabinet will receive a grant of $200,000, renewable for up to three years, to meet runaway and homeless youths’ immediate needs with temporary shelter, counseling, crisis intervention, and aftercare services in Washoe County. The Children’s Cabinet was the only Nevada-based community-service organization to receive this funding to go toward our Basic Center Program (BCP).
“Youth homelessness is a critical issue, and unfortunately, one that disproportionately impacts our state,” said Senator Rosen and Senator Cortez Masto. “Last year, Nevada experienced the highest rate of youth homelessness in the country. This issue puts our children at risk of serious harm, and it impacts public health and safety. We are glad to see that The Children’s Cabinet has been awarded this grant funding to provide critical resources and a safe place for youth experiencing homelessness or an unstable living environment. We will continue working in Congress to protect the safety and well-being of all of Nevada’s children.”
The Children’s Cabinet’s BCP provides a comprehensive program that includes street outreach, temporary shelter, and counseling services to runaway and homeless youth with a goal of family reunification when appropriate. Using a trauma-informed approach, the BCP coordinator and street outreach case managers identify youth in need of services through Project Safe Place and street outreach activities. We then provide gateway services, access to temporary emergency shelter, screening and assessments, and development of an individualized case plan.
“BCP offers significant opportunities for at-risk youth to transform their lives,” said Kim Young, Executive Director of The Children’s Cabinet. “Our street outreach team is in a vital position to actively help runaway and homeless youth who need access to resources, support, and shelter. This funding will allow us to continue to truly help the youth in Washoe County and make a difference in their futures.”
With this award, The Children’s Cabinet will be able to reach 7,500 youth per year in Washoe County. Cabinet outreach workers will connect with runaway and homeless youth and provide information about Project Safe Place information with the 1-800 number they can call or text 24/7. Youth will receive services and resources to make a safe exit from life on the streets.
